In my courses requiring individual projects, students often ask how many participants they need. They expect a simple answer like “20” or “100.” However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of participants depends on various factors, and neglecting them leads to failure.
The type of study you are conducting greatly affects the number of participants needed. Surveys, designed to generalize results to larger populations, require larger sample sizes to capture variability and ensure statistical reliability. If you plan to segment results by demographics or subgroups, even more participants are necessary for meaningful comparisons. In contrast, experimental studies in UX and HF research often require fewer participants, as they focus on detecting controlled effects, such as comparing design performance. However, the number still depends on factors like the expected effect size, a smaller effect size needs more participants, while a larger effect size requires fewer. If the effect size is unclear, you can estimate it from similar studies or conduct a pilot study.
Your study design also matters. A within-subjects design, where participants experience multiple conditions, usually requires fewer participants than a between-subjects design, where different groups experience different conditions. But within-subjects designs come with potential risks, like carryover effects, which might make you rethink how many participants you actually need.
Statistical power is crucial for detecting real effects, with most researchers aiming for a power of 0.8, meaning an 80 percent chance of finding true results. To calculate the required participants, consider your expected effect size, significance level (usually 0.05), and statistical test. Tools like G*Power or R can help, but skipping this step risks missing real effects or chasing meaningless results.
Data variability and attrition rates are crucial factors. Noisy measures like subjective ratings or perceived workload require more participants to overcome variability. Participants might quit surveys mid-study, and technical failures or noncompliance can lead to missing data in experiments. Always plan extra participants to account for these issues.
Finally, consider practical constraints. Expensive and time-consuming experimental studies like eye tracking, EEG, or usability testing can take weeks for 10 participants, while surveys with 100 participants might only take a few days. Researchers must balance ideal sample sizes with available resources.
The number of participants depends on factors like survey variability, reliability, and subgroup analysis. Experimental studies may require fewer participants, but factors like study design, effect size, and statistical tests influence the final count.
